Haris Zafeiropoulos: Post-doctoral Researcher, KU Leuven
Haris Zafeiropoulos is a post-doctoral researcher, currently at KU Leuven and the Lab of Microbial Systems Biology, and will soon join the Coyte lab at the University of Manchester. He studied Biology in the Biology Department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and did his master’s in Bioinformatics at the University of Crete, Greece. During his PhD at the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture (IMBBC) of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) and the University of Crete, he developed algorithms, software tools and platforms to tackle challenges in the analysis of amplicon and shotgun metagenomic sequencing data, and metabolic models, to enhance the study of microbial communities. His main scientific interests focus on metabolic microbial interactions and the feedback between environmental changes, community structure, and ecosystem impact. He is a research associate at the GeomScale open source project and a guest editor at the JoVE journal on metabolic complementarity in microbial communities.
Abstract
How do microbes interact, and how do their communities shape ecosystems? This talk goes inside microbial communities: the algorithms, software tools and metabolic models that reveal microbial interactions, what amplicon and shotgun metagenomic data analysis can tell us, and the feedback between environmental changes, community structure and ecosystem impact.
No advanced background needed: the talk is aimed at anyone curious about microbiology, bioinformatics or microbial ecology.
